Packing Up My Cookbooks and Moving

Our ordeal with the roofing disaster and debris finally came to a close a couple of weeks ago. The lawsuits were settled finally and now we are going to move. I haven’t moved for 18 years and I have forgotten what a big job it is. A lot of our stuff is still covered with roofing debris and will have to be cleaned before we can pack.

Like my hundreds of cookbooks, which are covered with little black rocks, black sand and microscopic dust. So today I started vacuuming them, wiping them down with wet paper towels and then dry paper towels. I haven’t really looked at my cookbooks since I started my blog. Maybe occasionally for reference, but not to really read them. So today I actually picked up and opened about half of my cookbooks. Each and every one. It was such a nostalgic trip, almost like a reunion with old friends that I hadn’t seen for years, but had enjoyed so much in the past and had wonderful memories of our times together. Anyone seeing me caress the pages of a cookbook and sigh would have probably thought I was a little dingy.

Tomorrow I will go and pick up a lot of boxes from the moving company and start putting the books in them. I am looking forward to unpacking them in the new house and putting them in a logical order in the bookcases. I have stacks of cookbooks all over my house, so I will get to incorporate them into those already on the shelves. A wonderful OCD project awaits me.

So I am going to take a little vacation from my blog so I can pack and move. I will be back in a couple of weeks with some fun recipes that I have in mind. In fact, I was going to make some Black and White Checkerboard Cookies today and photograph them. I went so far yesterday as to making the vanilla and chocolate dough, which was chilling in the refrigerator today. But then I thought to myself that I better put the dough in the freezer and get to packing. It will keep just fine until I get in the new house.

I’ll talk to you soon.

Glad to hear things are resolved and I hope you have a non-eventful move! Looking forward to your return!

Embrace the OCD, lady! Now get crackin’ and start packin’!

One of the good things about packing is connecting with every item – recalling a memory of significance with each, even if only for a brief moment. Do you pack it away in a box to move forward with you in your next chapter? Or, part ways? Enjoy the memories. See ya soon.

On the bright side, the move will be like a “fresh start” for you. No more black spots, no more dirt, no more grit… assuming you’re getting them all off now.

Cookbooks are like old friends, aren’t they? That’s why I can never part with any of mine – they’re like yearbooks to me. I remember exactly where I was in my life when I purchased each book.

Good luck with the move – don’t get lost in your boxes!

I am behind in my reading and didn’t know of your roofing trauma. Good luck with your packing and moving. I know exactly what you mean about opening a cookbook (or 20 of them) and caressing the pages. They hold such memories!

See you when you get back from this adventure!

checking in to see if you have made it through your move? hope you are alive and well…

Hi Everyone! I am alive and well. Thank you all for your well wishes and encouragement. We are completely moved into the new house; the moving van came Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Now everything is still in boxes, so the unpacking must begin. Ugh! Soon everything will be organized in the kitchen and I can start cooking again. Thank goodness! Lynne xo
